From 1790 to 1794 John Quincy Adams wrote a number of articles under the pen-names "Publiola" and "Columbus." The articles, supporting the Federalists of Washington's administration and denouncing Thomas Paine for his ideas about the common man possessing the same rights under God as the well born, were so well written that President Washington assumed they had been written by Adams' father, former President John Adams.
